Work on the old psych lands - town says they aren't supposed to be there yet!!!

A neighbour called the Town yesterday to find out about the hours that the machines/plows etc. work on the land behind the houses on WSG on the old psych lands and the town said " they aren't even supposed to be there right now"..... "nothing has been officially passed"

I am not sure, but are we the only people in the neighbourhood getting rather annoyed by the "beeping" and plowing and machinery noises???

I understand it will be constant like that once the plan "goes through" BUT if they "AREN'T EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE THERE YET"- perhaps we can do something about that?

It would be great to be able to have a BBQ or sit in ones yard without the constant noise of machines and dirt being shuffled around - not to mention their hours - working at least 12 hour days...

Does anyone else have any information on this?
Thanks

Interesting Tidbit for You:

In July 2007, the ECOPlace developer submitted their plans to the Town for their Gordon/Victoria mega-structure of condos and offices.

Previous to this, the developer had been shopping this land to the Durham/York Region group that was in charge of the site selection for the new regional incinerator (the one recently announced for Clarington). This plan was ended when, in March 2007 (five months before the ECOPlace application), the developer had been told that their site would be removed from further consideration because it had significant disadvantages (incl. the fact that is located near environmentally sensitive areas).

Good to know that the folks at Durham York Waste are on the ball !

So much for trying to spread a little patriotic spirit in WSG.

Happy Canada Day :(

Thanks for the efforts to the "flag planters" anyway!!!

I've noticed a few people on Lighthouse and on Whitby Shores have had their address "painted" on the tops of their garages - spelt out in writing (ie. 29 Whitby Shores Greenway). I think this looks really nice and wonder if anyone knows who can do this.

Thanks

Like many Whitby Shores people, I enjoy living near the water and walking along the lakefront paths. I would like to see the waterfront area around the harbour further developed into a jewel for both residents and visitors, with a mixture of housing, shops and other amenities.

The lands are owned by Brookfield Homes. Brookfield is in the process of applying to the Town of Whitby to revise their original site plan to increase both the number of condos and their size (instead of 3 condos that are 15 stories high, Brookfield now wants 5 condos ranging in size - including 9, 17, 21, 27, and 33 stories). This would increase residential density per hectare by 320% over the original plan.

I would like to see the Port Whitby area developed...but not as the developers vision...as our own vision.

To judge if others feel the same way, I have drafted a simple petition:

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/notobrookfield/

Please have a look and let me know what you think. Cut and paste the link into your email and send it on to others.

We only have one waterfront and only one chance to build it right.

Let's see what the people think before the July 7th Council meeting. We know Mayor Perkins has reservations about Brookfields vision for our port lands. Let's see if she is alone.

Thank you.

In case you haven't heard about this from other various sources, the fourth round of public information centres (PICs) for the Highway 407 East Environmental Assessment (EA) is rapidly approaching.

Here's what's going to be covered, as posted on the EA web site:

Quote:The following information will be presented.

Changes to and additional property requirements
Refinements to the technically recommended route
Updated Existing Conditions information

Local road treatments (underpass, overpass, closed) associated with the corridor

Right-of-way cross sections, including provisions for High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes
Location of potential mitigation measures (noise berms / walls, landscaping, etc)
Community Value Plan (CVP) process
Property acquisition process

My program will be much the same as a traditional nursery school setting, with a weekly program plan with fun and educational activities for children as young as 2 up to age 5. I am offering a 2 day or 3 day program, either mornings or afternoons. I will run the program Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I will also be providing drop-in care on those days for parents not yet ready to commit to the full program, but find they need a break here and there and wish to drop-off their child during my program.
Hi Folks...

There is a Whitby Planning Committee meeting tonight (regular meeting...not to be confused with the REGIONAL Places to Grow meeting on Wednesday night).

There are two items of interest that relate to new developments:

Planning Report PL 92-08 - Official Plan Review Update

pg. 9..."However, as greenfield land diminishes, there is increased pressure for high density residential development and for residential intensification. There have recently been a number of such proposals
and expressions of interest brought before the Whitby Planning Department, particularly when compared to years prior to the release of the Growth Plan. Some proposals may be well-suited for intensification. However, others may not be compatible with surrounding land uses, or may simply be over-intensification within an existing community. Such proposals and potential (re)development sites for increased residential densities and intensification could significantly alter Whitby’s existing urban fabric. Many intensification proposals in the Greater Golden Horseshoe are being touted as meeting the Growth Plan’s intensification “imperative” as a basis for their merit. The intent of the Growth Plan is to direct the majority of intensification to Urban Growth Centres (UGC’s). (Whitby is not designated as a UGC – within Durham Region, only Pickering and Oshawa have UGC’s.)"

Message: Developers are trying to use Places to Grow as an excuse to convert employment land to residential land (as the Ecoplace developers do)...we must be very wary of such proposals, esp. since the pressure for new growth is in other Durham municipalities.

Planning Report PL 106-08 - Whitby Response to Durham Region's Report on Places to Grow

pg 12...[The recommended Regional growth scanario]...recognizes “emerging growth nodes”. This includes an "emerging waterfront village” at Port Whitby, among other regional locations. Waterfront villages are described as new waterfront communities that are already the focus of much development approval activity, are in proximity to existing road, transit and servicing infrastructure, as well as employment opportunities. Staff generally concur [with this idea] as reflected in Whitby’s Official Plan.

Message: The Planning Dept supports development of the Port Whitby area as part of Places to Grow...Port Whitby is east of Gordon and south of Victoria...it is the area around the harbour...and it does not include the Ecoplace lands.

The supposed main driver for Ecoplace (as said by the developers and Council members) is Places to Grow. But both the Town planners and the Regional planners disagree with that statement. In fact, the Regional consultant report specifically recommends not proceeding with Ecoplace in favour of using the land for its intended purpose (prestige business park w. high end employers). It seems the Town planners might feel the same way.

Did anyone see the guy out flying about the neighborhood doing tricks in his airplane? He's back!

Personally I think it's awesome ... sat on my deck and watched him. He's quite good and the precision that he has when doing his stunts is amazing.

Recognizing that's just one person's opinion I figured I'd open the floor to anyone who wants to complain. How dangerous it might be ... or how the noise is disturbing ... or how it doesn't make sense to waste gas by flying a plane with no destination in mind ... or how he parks his plane on Tallships for more than 3 hours.

Hi,

I was looking into bullfrog power (http://www.bullfrogpower.com). Just wondering if anyone has it? If so, do you like it? How much extra is it per month? On the website, it states around $1/day extra. Is that about right?

Thanks!

Whats Next for Gordon/Victoria Lands?

Hi Folks...

There will be a Public Information Session next week (June 25, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m) at the Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby).

The meeting is being held to outline and discuss the Regional plans in response to the provincial Places to Grow mandate. The Region has commissioned a consultant to recommend what the Region (and therefore the Municipalities) should do to support the Places to Grow plans.

This is important because any new developments in Whitby (incl. the Gordon and Victoria lands) must conform to the Regional level of planning. And the Regional consultant is currently recommending that the Gordon and Victoria lands not be converted from employment land to mixed use residential land in order to preserve the land for future needed employment purposes (as originally intended by the Town of Whitby Official Plan.

This will be an interesting and important meeting. And I hope as many people can attend as came to the April meeting in Whitby.

The formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m. If you are unable to attend, written submissions may be sent by July 14, 2008 to :

Growing Durham Study
Planning Department, 4th Floor

NG Connection for BBQ

Can anybody refer me to someone who does natural gas connections for BBQs?

It's a small job so I'd like someone who wants to do a bit of work on the side rather than calling a large company to do it. They all seem to be pretty busy and won't be too excited to do something like this in a timely manner.

Thanks
